About the Master Teachers

JAMES DONLON

James Donlon has been a celebrated master teacher, international performer and director since 1970. He has performed his original physical theatre throughout North America, Europe and Latin America to critical acclaim. James has been on the faculties of acting schools such as The American Conservatory Theater, The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, The National Theatre Conservatory-Denver Center, The Yale School of Drama, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-San Diego, and the Oregon Center for the Arts. Among his students have been Broadway star Terrence Mann, award winning director & actor Joe Mantello, and noted writer Peter Hedges. Donlon has presented residencies with special institutions like El Teatro Campesino, Mexico City ‘s Bellas Artes, Prague’s national Academy of Performing Arts (AMU), Dublin’s Gaiety School of Acting, and Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus Clown College where he taught Tony Award-winner Bill Irwin and Big Apple Circus icon Barry Lubin.

He has been a film movement coach for Oscar-winners Javier Bardem, Kathy Bates, and Frances McDormand, as well as Benjamin Bratt and David Strathairn. James is the only physical theater artist ever invited to perform with legendary San Francisco street mime Robert Shields of CBS’ The Shields & Yarnell Show. He is the first American clown invited to perform in the famed Teatro Dimitri of Switzerland. In 2009 James founded the Flying Actor Studio, an international center for the study of physical theatre.

MONIQUE HAFEN

Monique Hafen* has worked as a professional actress for over 10 years on stages across the country! As a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, she has worked throughout the Bay Area at such theaters as ACT, SF Playhouse, San Jose REP, San Jose Stage, Center REP, and many others! In addition to her work on stage, Monique has also worked behind the scenes as a casting director. Her experience behind the table has given her a keen eye for what to do and what not to do once you get into an audition room.

Seventeen years of vocal training, both privately and at Santa Clara University, has made her knowledgeable in several forms of singing, from opera to pop, with a special focus on musical theatre. She has lent her vocal coaching skills to high school productions as well as professional theatre companies.

LENA HART

Lena Hart* is a professional Alexander Technique Teacher, Actor, and Coach. Since moving to the Bay Area she has performed at theaters such as Center Repertory Theatre in Pilgrims Musa and Sheri, Theatreworks in Of Mice and Men, the Willows Theatre in A Doll’s House, Chess, and the Reorient Festival celebrating Middle Eastern playwrights. Her off-Broadway and New York credits include King John with Guerilla Shakespeare and Summer and Smoke at The Clurman Theatre. Ms. Hart’s regional credits include Interpreting William at Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Yellow Leaf at Pioneer Theatre Company, and numerous productions with Chautauqua Theatre Company and the Clarence Brown Theatre. She has also performed in various films, soap operas, and commercials. Ms. Hart earned her M.F.A in Acting from the University of Tennessee where she also taught Acting. She received her American Society of the Alexander Technique Certification from The Alexander Education Center of Berkeley.
